This article preserves the physiognomy vocabulary I used when it was first published. In my current practice I treat facial morphology not as a definitive verdict on personality or behaviour, but as a communication hypothesis that must be verified through behaviour, context and questions.
See my current method →In 2005, the jury of a Stockholm entrepreneurship competition ranked three young men's "buy now, pay later" idea dead last. Beneath the polite applause, the message was clear: nothing will come of this. Twenty years later, that idea is called Klarna, the giant that carried BNPL from Europe to the world and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2025 at a valuation around $15 billion. And the most stubborn of those three young men was a taxi driver's son who started dreaming while flipping burgers at Burger King: Sebastian Siemiatkowski.
How does a person stay at the wheel of the same company for twenty years, holding course while being praised to the skies and buried underground in turn? In face reading, the answer is written across Siemiatkowski's long-lined, thick-browed, fiery face.
1. The Long, Defined Nose: Engine of a Twenty-Year Marathon
At the center of Siemiatkowski's face sits a long, prominent nose. In our physiognomy notes, a long nose marks work-focus, a high drive for achievement, ambition, and survival ability, the structure that locks onto a goal. Bill Gurley's long nose was a compass of justice; Siemiatkowski's is a marathon engine.
The evidence is the career itself: in the same seat since 2005, through the post-dot-com winter, the mobile revolution, the pandemic boom, and the 2022 interest-rate shock. He was at the wheel when the valuation hit $45.6 billion in 2021, and still there when it fell to $6.7 billion in 2022. A long nose doesn't quit; it regulates its breathing.
2. Thick, Dark Eyebrows: A Brotherhood Founded at Burger King
In physiognomy, thick eyebrows represent liver energy, passion, drive, and the strength to run several battles at once; eyebrows also symbolize brothers and fellow travelers. Look at Siemiatkowski's dense, dark brows: the Scandinavian version of the "empire built with a brother" eyebrows from my Fırat İşbecer column.
Because Klarna is not a one-man story either: Sebastian founded it with Niklas Adalberth, with whom he flipped burgers at Burger King in his youth, and their schoolmate Victor Jacobsson. Three students with no capital walked the road together from the benches of the Stockholm School of Economics to one of Europe's most valuable fintechs. Thick-browed faces don't run alone; they form caravans.
3. Bright, Lively Eyes and a Quick Tongue: Spokesman of the Fire Element
The lively eyes that light up whenever Siemiatkowski faces a camera, and the tongue that never rests, are classic markers of the Fire element in my physiognomy experience: powerful in communication, witty, spontaneous, a born salesman, but sometimes sharp-tongued. He is the polar opposite of Storonsky's icy "cyborg" communication; Siemiatkowski lives his battles and his loves in public, on X, on podcasts.
The evidence is dated: in May 2022 he announced layoffs with a transparent open letter, earning both applause and fire. In February 2024 he told the world that Klarna's AI assistant, built on an OpenAI partnership, was "doing the work of 700 customer service agents", a statement debated across the industry for months, brave to some, too hot to others. Fire warms; sometimes it burns. That is both this face's power and its risk.
4. The Sloped, Open Forehead: The Fast-Learning Negotiator
Siemiatkowski's backward-sloped, open forehead reads in physiognomy as fast learning, rapid analysis, and strong negotiation skills, hardware that carries a risk of impulsiveness. You can read this forehead in Klarna's critical turns: the US market entry in 2015; the fast pivot to profitability after the 2022 shock; declaring itself an "AI-first company" ahead of the industry in 2023-2024. Remember the persistence of Eric Yuan and his eight visa rejections from an earlier column, in Siemiatkowski, the same persistence appears converted into speed.
5. The Angular, Beard-Framed Chin: The Whetstone of Rejection
The angular, defined chin beneath that trimmed beard marks, in my physiognomy experience, willpower, the urge to build life by one's own standards, and endurance against criticism. This chin's trials are documented: last place from the 2005 jury, investor doors closed in his face, an 85 percent valuation collapse in 2022, and headlines declaring "Klarna is finished." But the bell that rang at the NYSE in September 2025 was the sound of a twenty-year whetstone: the rejected idea returned from the IPO podium.
Conclusion: Fire's Warmth, Wood's Stubbornness
On Siemiatkowski's face, Fire and Wood work hand in hand: in the lively eyes and quick tongue, Fire's communication power, spontaneity, and sales genius; in the long nose, dense brows, and angular chin, Wood's competitive stubbornness and passion for rooting. This column has written much about Storonsky's Metal chill and Thiel's Metal calculus; Siemiatkowski is the first face on the same fintech firing line who keeps his stove burning out in the open.
Perhaps that is Klarna's real formula: a fire no jury could extinguish, burning in the same hearth for twenty years, eventually melts a stock exchange bell into its own medal. How many rejections could your fire survive?
The theme of persuasion and commercial resilience in the face of rejection in this reading of Sebastian Siemiatkowski can also shape the first moments of customer and team communication.
