This article preserves the physiognomy vocabulary I used when it was first published. In my current practice I treat facial morphology not as a definitive verdict on personality or behaviour, but as a communication hypothesis that must be verified through behaviour, context and questions.

Fintech loves a blockbuster: eagle-nosed hunters, ice cyborgs, visionaries shouting from stages. But some revolutions are born from a quiet bank statement. In the late 2000s, an Estonian living in London was paid in euros and lost a small fortune to his bank every month converting them to pounds. His friend suffered the same pain in reverse. So they set up a simple swap: you take my pounds, I take your euros. No bank, no fee, no border. That simple swap is today called Wise, the giant that went public on the London Stock Exchange in July 2021 via direct listing at a valuation around £8 billion. And that young man was Skype's employee number one: Taavet Hinrikus.

How does someone become a first employee, then a founder, then an investor for an entire continent, without a single tabloid feud? In face reading, the answer is written across Hinrikus's soft-featured, shaven-headed, calm face.

1. The Shaven Head and Open Forehead: Estonian Brainpower

The first thing you notice about Hinrikus is the broad, open forehead revealed as hair exits the stage entirely. Physiognomy are blunt: as hair recedes, intellectual power takes the lead; a broad forehead marks wide-ranging curiosity, strong memory, and the ability to see the big picture. This is the northernmost member of the "thinking forehead" family from my Paul Graham and Bill Gurley columns.

The evidence comes early: in 2003, before Skype was a global brand, he took a seat in Tallinn as that tiny team's first employee. Free internet calls were a mad idea back then; the open forehead saw the mathematics inside the madness, and studied at that school for eight years.

2. Rounded Features: A Mind That Flows Like Water

Hinrikus's soft, rounded features are the signature of the Water element in physiognomy: wisdom, creativity, high persuasive power, and the flexibility to take any shape. Water is formless; it takes the shape of its container but never loses its way. Facing an obstacle, it doesn't fight, it flows around.

The product this face built is exactly that: money should flow like water. TransferWise, founded with Kristo Käärmann in 2011, evaporated the invisible tax banks charged at border crossings, replacing it with simple peer-to-peer flow. In my İşbecer column I wrote that "the Water element goes around the obstacle but always reaches its target"; Hinrikus turned that sentence into a company. Today Wise routes tens of billions of pounds around borders every quarter.

3. Soft, Curved Eyebrows: A Two-Person Revolution

In my physiognomy experience, curved eyebrows appear in people who build emotional bonds, who are gentle and supportive, who like being part of a group; eyebrows also represent fellow travelers. Hinrikus's soft, unassuming curved brows whisper the most important truth of his story: this revolution has two authors.

The idea was born when Taavet's salary pain met Kristo's mortgage pain at the same table; from the 2011 founding to 2017, when he handed the CEO seat entirely to Kristo, the division of labor stayed graceful. Ego wars, founder lawsuits, leaked feuds, none of it happened. Curved eyebrows don't start succession battles; they hand over the watch.

4. Full Cheeks: A Reserve Replanted Across a Continent

The full cheeks completing Hinrikus's round face read in physiognomy as energy and the capacity to accumulate, with the lower cheek marking the "money vault." But this vault isn't selfish; combined with Earth texture, it turns into generosity.

The numbers are public: Wise's July 2021 listing made Hinrikus one of Estonia's first tech billionaires. And then? Did he retire to a yacht? No: in 2022 he co-founded Plural, a fund run by founders, investing in Europe's entrepreneurs. He has long been one of the most generous angels of the famous "Estonian mafia" network: planting what Skype earned into Wise, and what Wise earned into hundreds of European founders. What Earth was to İşbecer, the cheeks are to Hinrikus.

Conclusion: Water's Wisdom, Earth's Seed

On Taavet Hinrikus's face, Water and Earth have formed a quiet partnership: in the rounded lines and open forehead, Water's wisdom, flexibility, and disregard for borders; in the full cheeks, Earth's generosity that accumulates and replants. Storonsky's eagle nose wants to conquer borders; Hinrikus's water face doesn't even see them.

Perhaps the most radical revolutionaries are not the ones who shout, but the ones who flow: water drills through rock not by arguing, but by patience. Is your money, and are your ideas, still waiting at the border?

The theme of trust and bridge-building across borders in this reading of Taavet Hinrikus can also shape the first moments of customer and team communication. To see how I adapt language, questions, and presentation order to different decision styles, explore my Sales & Communication approach.
